Explain to me what a wedding ring symbolizes, and the importance of having a nice one?
Pretend I am a man who thinks wedding rings are materialistic and women who like them are materialistic, how would you explain to me what it means, and the importance as a woman to have a nice ring.
Please go beyond the typical "symbol of our love" line.. I need further explanation?

A ring is an outward symbol of an inward expression of your commitment to one another. As it is a circle it has no beginning and no end. The importance of having a nice one is that long after the wedding dress has been put away and the wedding flowers have wilted and the pictures have faded, you will still be wearing your ring. As you will wear it everyday of your life, I think a ring worth spending money on then your wedding dress etc.
I am not sure a women can convince a man of all this….his mother should have raised him to know his future wife would deserve a rock! JK! Good Luck
It is true that a wedding ring is a token of possession, but rather than symbolizing a man possessing a woman, it is the woman’s possession of something valuable given by the man. Hence the current practice of using a precious metal, such as gold, platinum or titanium.
A ring is a circle (you’ve probably noticed that) and a circle has very strong magical connotations. The circle is endless and timeless suggesting a repetitive unbroken wholeness in time and space. It even suggests reincarnation to some people because the person wants to publicly announce that they have found an intimate friend that they plan share the rest of their lives with.
I don’t think the wedding band has to be anything other than a plain band, it’s the message behind the ring that matters. The wedding band is an enduring symbol of your love. It has no end, it’s a circle, etc. I don’t think the wedding ring is materialistic, it is a symbol of your love whether it cost $50 or $5000. Wedding bands tend to be plain or to accent the engagement ring and they are usually not that expensive unless they have diamonds pr are platinum, etc. A plain gold ring can be purchased for $50 and still means the same thing as a $5000 ring. That’s what I would say.
As a woman, we are all subject to our own taste and style. More of THAT goes into the ring choice than the actual price or value. If you have nicer taste, you may want a nicer ring. Plain taste, more simple ring. It still means the same thing.
if you really want to know what a wedding ring means – then the description of "nice one" would have no place in the meaning. the ring symbolizes a bond… the only way u could get a guy to see your point about a fancy or expensive ring – would be able to say that it is something you wear all the time and it would need to match your likes and tastes.. for example if your fiance drives a bmw it would be like you saying well a car is a car and buying him a Kia… technically its a gift from you and he should love it… but HELL im sure he would feel really really self conscious about driving it.. Hope this helps.. best way for you to win this would be to find what his passion is and compare it to your "upscale ring" Best of luck!
As a wedding officiant, I always ask couples what their wedding bands symbolize to them. Some of the ideas I often incorporate into ceremonies is that the ring shows the world that you are loved and are special to someone, that the metal is enduring as your bond should be, and that they are a reminder of your vows when you are apart. I have also written ring vows that say that the ring encircles your finger as your partner’s love encircles you.
I’m not sure what you mean by "a nice ring," since many wedding rings are simple metal bands.
Engagement rings, if that is what you are referring to, are given to a woman as a show of the seriousness of the man’s intentions. Some men see it as a way of showing that they are financially stable and ready for marriage.
Best wishes!
